How to Choose the Right Junction Box – Complete Guide
What benefits can choosing different junction boxes bring to your project?
Different application scenarios need to be matched with junction boxes of corresponding specifications and stable performance. The effects they bring will be unexpected. Below I will introduce different types of junction boxes for you according to their use in various scenarios.
Classification of Junction Boxes:
By Material
The materials of junction boxes include PVC / ABS / PC, which are the most common plastic materials for junction boxes.Iron / aluminum alloy / stainless steel 304 / 316 are common materials for metal junction boxes.
By Protection
Function (Key)Ordinary junction boxes (IP20 / IP30)Waterproof junction boxes (IP54 / IP65 / IP66 / IP67)Explosion-proof junction boxesSplash-proof / corrosion-resistant junction boxes
By Installation
MethodSurface-mounted: usually embedded in walls or used on suspended ceilingsConcealed-mounted: used on walls or equipment surfaces, mostly for outdoor applications。

| Impact & Hardness | Soft texture, average impact resistance, easy to deform | Good toughness & rigidity, impact resistance better than PVC | High hardness, excellent toughness, top impact resistance |
| Weather & UV Resistance | Poor, easy to yellow and age, not for outdoor use | Average, weak UV resistance, suitable for indoor use | Strong, UV resistant and non-yellowing, ideal for outdoor |
| Flame Retardancy | Flame retardant grade depends on additives | Can reach V-0 (flame retardant modified) | Good self-extinguishing property, can reach V-0 |
| Appearance & Transparency | Opaque (white/grey) | Mainly solid color, non-transparent | Transparent available for internal observation |
| Cost | Lowest, cost-effective | Medium, higher than PVC | Highest, high-performance engineering grade |
| Typical Applications | Indoor home wiring, dry environments, low-cost projects | Indoor industrial equipment, household appliances, general impact-resistant scenes | Outdoor, high/low temperature, high reliability, transparent observation required |
Selection Guide
Indoor use: Choose PVC junction box, which is cost-effective and affordable while meeting basic needs.
Indoor industrial use: ABS junction box is preferred, as it provides an excellent balance of rigidity and toughness.
Outdoor & reliable use: Choose PC junction box, which offers outstanding weather resistance and strength.
Reminder*
Safety is the top priority no matter which material you choose. Always select V-0 flame retardant grade materials. For outdoor applications, safety always comes first.
| Comparison Items | Iron Junction Box | Aluminum Alloy Junction Box | Stainless Steel 304 | Stainless Steel 316 |
| Core Advantages | Lowest price, high strength, good rigidity, excellent electromagnetic shielding effect | Light weight, good heat dissipation, corrosion resistance, easy processing, exquisite appearance | Rust proof, moisture resistant, high strength, durable, cost-effective | Super corrosion resistance, salt spray resistance, acid and alkali resistance, marine/chemical grade durability |
| Weight | Heavy | Lightest | Medium to heavy | Medium to heavy (slightly heavier than 304) |
| Rust / Corrosion Resistance | Poor, easy to rust, must be protected by painting/galvanizing | Good, natural oxide film forms on the surface, no rust in general environment | Excellent, resistant to daily moisture and ordinary acid-base, not easy to rust | Extremely excellent, resistant to seawater, salt spray and strong corrosive environment, almost no rust |
| Weather Resistance | Ordinary, easy to age and rust outdoors | Good, suitable for general indoor and outdoor environments | Excellent, suitable for outdoor, humid and mild corrosive environments | Optimal, suitable for harsh environments such as coastal areas, chemical plants and marine |

| Heat Dissipation Performance | Ordinary | Excellent, one of the best heat dissipation among metals | Good | Good |
| Cost & Price | Lowest | Medium | Higher | Highest |
| Applicable Scenarios | Indoor general industrial control, low-cost projects, occasions requiring shielding | Built-in equipment, lightweight equipment, general indoor and outdoor use | Outdoor, humid workshops, general anti-corrosion needs | Coastal areas, ships, chemical plants, sewage treatment, high salt and high humidity environments |
Advantages of Iron / Aluminum Alloy / Stainless Steel 304 / 316:
Iron:
Low cost, fully suitable for indoor use.
Aluminum Alloy:
Famous for its lightweight and good heat dissipation.
Outdoor use:
304 must be selected, with excellent corrosion resistance. Note that it cannot be used in seawater or high-salt environments, as it will rust after long-term use in such environments.、
Selection of Protection Level:
P stands for dustproof and waterproof.
Ordinary junction boxes (IP20 / IP30)
Suitable for household use and indoor dry environments. They have low-level waterproof performance, low price and simple material.
Waterproof junction boxes (IP54 / IP65 / IP66 / IP67)
Focus on industrial-grade waterproof performance. They are generally made of ABS / PC raw materials, specially designed for outdoor, humid, splash-proof and dust-proof applications. With high-grade materials, they are extremely cost-effective.
Explosion-proof Junction Box
Mainly used in: oil and gas, chemical industry, coal mines, and areas with dust explosion hazards.
Splash-proof / Corrosion-resistant Junction Box。
Mainly used in: kitchens, bathrooms, chemical plants, and coastal areas.
Applicable Scenarios for Flush Mounting (Concealed Installation):
Commonly used for wall wiring installation in kitchens, bathrooms, buildings, offices and other scenarios. It improves safety while providing an aesthetic appearance to the overall electrical layout.
Applicable Scenarios for Surface Mounting:
Temporary construction sites, equipment rooms, balconies, etc. Usually installed on the surface of walls, providing convenience for later maintenance work.
Choosing a good junction box is not as good as choosing the right one for you.
For indoor dry areas: choose IP20, ordinary PVC material.
For humid areas, bathrooms and kitchens: priority is IP44–IP54, providing splash-proof effect.
For outdoor use: priority is IP65/IP66, standard waterproof type. For underwater or harsh environments where water may fully enter the enclosure: priority is IP67/IP68.
Based on corrosion conditions, select the material and specify PVC.
Based on the amount of wire bundles to be accommodated, select a box volume ≥ total cross-sectional area of conductors × 4.Sufficient heat dissipation space must be reserved inside the enclosure.Deeper boxes are required for multiple wires / thick wires (≥10mm²).
